Does not breed in Australia. May - July in north-east Asia.

Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
gustavi Swinhoe, 1863 - Northern Russia, from Pechora Region through central-northern and north-eastern Siberia, south to about 64° north to Chukotskiy and Kamchatka Peninsulas and Komandorskiye Island, Bering Sea.
menzbieri Shulpin, 1928 - Southern Ussuriland and far north-eastern China. Not recognised by some authorities.
stejnegeri Ridgway, 1883 - Commander Island. Winters in eastern Asia.
Similar Species
Australian Pipit (Anthus australis) which has lighter breast markings or only faintly streaked and is larger, and with adult female non-breeding and immature Red-throated Pipit (Anthus cervinus) which have heavily streaked underparts and a more prominent malar streak, and has a deeper buff color in the double wing-bar.
