Motacilla flava (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) was split by AOU (2004) into Yellow Wagtail (Motacilla flava) and Motacilla tschutschuensis, and by Sangster et al. (1998) into Yellow Wagtail (Motacilla flava), Ashy-headed Wagtail (Motacilla cinereocapilla), Black-headed Wagtail (Motacilla feldegg), Motacilla flavissima, Spanish Wagtail (Motacilla iberiae), White-headed Wagtail (Motacilla leucocephala), Yellow-headed Wagtail (Motacilla lutea), Kamchatka Wagtail (Motacilla simillima), Green-headed Wagtail (Motacilla taivana), Motacilla tschutschuensis and Grey-headed Wagtail (Motacilla thunbergi). Pavlova et al. (2003) identified three clades within Yellow Wagtail (Motacilla flava) with Citrine Wagtail (Motacilla citreola) nested within these, while Alström et al. (2003) identified two clades within Yellow Wagtail (Motacilla flava). The BirdLife Taxonomic Working Group find these treatments counter-intuitive and mutually contradictory and follow the treatment of Tyler (2004) in recognising flava as one large polytypic species and citreola as one small polytypic species pending a more coherent and complete analysis of the molecular and morphological evidence.

Not recognised as a species by BirdLife International.

Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Yellow Wagtail (Motacilla flava).
