Subspecies
No obvious close relative, but has been thought perhaps to form a superspecies with Pemba Sunbird (Cinnyris pembae). Recent mitochondrial DNA studies indicate that it is close to Red-chested Sunbird (Cinnyris erythrocercus), Buff-throated Sunbird (Chalcomitra adelberti), Scarlet-chested Sunbird (Chalcomitra senegalensis) and Bronze Sunbird (Nectarinia kilimensis). These results furthermore point to an African origin via the Comoro Is, colonists spreading from there to Madagascar.
Proposed subspecies nesophilus (from Grand Comoro) is treated as a synonym of moebii.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
moebii Reichenow, 1887 - Grand Comoro, in western Comoro Is. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Grand Comoro Sunbird (Cinnyris moebii).
voeltzkowi Reichenow, 1905 - Mohéli, in western Comoros. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Moheli Sunbird (Cinnyris voeltzkowi).
