Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Hunter's Sunbird (Chalcomitra hunteri) and sometimes regarded as conspecific, but the two are ecologically segregated in area of marginal overlap in eastern Kenya.
Several additional subspecies proposed: adamauae (described from Adamaoua, in north-central Cameroon), considered inseparable from acik; saturatior (from Malanje, in Angola) and inaestimata (Dar es Salaam, in eastern Tanzania), both synonymized with gutturalis; and aequatorialis (Bukoba, in north-western Tanzania) and erythrinae (Trans Nzoia District, in Kenya), both merged with lamperti.

lamperti (Reichenow, 1897) - Southern Sudan (east of White Nile: Imatong Mts, Leboni Forest), eastern DRCongo (L Albert south to northern L Tanganyika), west, central and southern Uganda and central Kenya south to western Tanzania.
