Subspecies
Genus often subsumed in Nectarinia. With such treatment, specific name of this species becomes preoccupied and is replaced by next available name, kikuyuensis; preussi then has date priority and becomes the nominate subspecies. May form a superspecies with Greater Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris afer).
Proposed subspecies genderuensis (from Genduru Mts, in Adamaoua Plateau, in north-central Cameroon) and parvirostris (from Bioko I) considered inseparable from preussi.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
preussi Reichenow, 1892 - Bioko I (Fernando Póo), south-eastern Nigeria, Cameroon and north-western Central African Republic.
reichenowi (Reichenow, 1892) - Southern Sudan, north-eastern DRCongo, south-west, north-eastern and eastern Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and western and central Kenya.
