Subspecies
Has been thought to be possibly part of a superspecies formed by Green-headed Sunbird (Cyanomitra verticalis), Bannerman's Sunbird (Cyanomitra bannermani) and Blue-headed Sunbird (Cyanomitra alinae).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- bansoensis Bannerman, 1922 - South-eastern Nigeria (Obudu Plateau and Mambilla Plateau) and highlands of western Cameroon (except Mt Cameroon).
- oritis (Reichenow, 1892) - Mt Cameroon (south-western Cameroon).
- poensis Alexander, 1903 - Bioko I (Fernando Póo).
