Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Banded Sunbird (Anthreptes rubritorques). Subspecies sometimes treated as two distinct species.
Proposed subspecies amadoni (from Rumpi Hills, in western Cameroon) considered insufficiently distinct from tephrolaemus, differing from latter only in slightly smaller size. Description of pujoli (from Guinea) is based on a juvenile specimen of nominate subspecies.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
rectirostris (Shaw, 1812) - Extreme southern Mali, Sierra Leone and eastern and south-eastern Guinea east to Ghana.
tephrolaemus (Jardine & Fraser, 1852) - South-eastern Benin and southern Nigeria east, including Bioko I (Fernando Póo), to southern Central African Republic, DRCongo, southern Uganda and western Kenya, south to north-western Angola and north-western Tanzania. Also southern Sudan (Imatong Mts). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Grey-chinned Sunbird (Anthreptes tephrolaemus).
