Habitat
Sub-montane evergreen forests, in clearings, rurl gardens, very degraded forest. From sea-level - 1,000 m.

Range (Guide)
Kenya (B) (NB), Tanzania [United Republic of] (B) (NB).

Coastal south-eastern Kenya (Sokoke-Arabuko Forest) and north-eastern and central Tanzania (eastern Usambara Mts and nearby, and Ndundulu Mts).
 
Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status EN
Habitat loss and degradation are the main threats.

Habits
In pairs or family groups. Often forming flocks with other species.

Food
Nectar, insects and other arthropods.

Voice
A 'seeet seeet' uttered in contact. Song is a high-pitched jumble of 'chissick' and other unmusical notes.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Recently, this species and its three congeners were placed in a genus Hedydipna, but this name invalid, current genus name having precedence. Males in Ndundulu Mts, in central Tanzania, are brighter metallic blue, less green, than those elsewhere in species' range, and possibly represent an undescribed geographical subspecies. Further study is required.

Similar Species
Female Plain-backed Sunbird (Anthreptes reichenowi) which has olive and yellow tones.
