Lowland forest, thick bush, gallery forest, forest edges and gardens. From sea-level - 1,000 m.
Mozambique (B) (NB), Tanzania [United Republic of] (B) (NB), Zimbabwe (B) (NB).
Vagrant to South Africa (NB), Swaziland.
Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).
Status NT
Habitat destruction and degradation through deforestation is the main threat.

Subspecies
Sometimes regarded as forming a superspecies with Anchieta's Sunbird (Anthreptes anchietae).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- yokanae Hartert, 1921 - South-eastern Kenya (Sokoke) southern in coastal forests to north-eastern and south-eastern Tanzania.
- reichenowi Gunning, 1909 - North-central and eastern Zimbabwe, south-western and south-eastern Mozambique and north-eastern South Africa.
