Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland and swamp forest, dry savanna.
Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Gabon.

Southern Cameroon, southern Central African Republic, Gabon and PRCongo east to western and northern DRCongo (east to Ituri Forest); also north-eastern Angola.

Subspecies
No subspecies.
Forms a superspecies with Western Violet-backed Sunbird (Anthreptes longuemarei), Eastern Violet-backed Sunbird (Anthreptes orientalis) and Uluguru Violet-backed Sunbird (Anthreptes neglectus). Males from Gabon and lower R Congo have buffer breast and more violet on throat than those from eastern DRCongo (Ituri Mts), and some adult females have white (not yellow) belly, but it is unclear whether recognition of geographical subspecies is warranted. In original description, species name clearly appears to be adjectival, and gender must be corrected.
