Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Eastern Violet-backed Sunbird (Anthreptes orientalis), Uluguru Violet-backed Sunbird (Anthreptes neglectus) and Violet-tailed Sunbird (Anthreptes aurantius). Subspecies haussarum sometimes included within nominate.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

longuemarei (Lesson, 1831) - Senegal south to Guinea-Bissau and east to northern Sierra Leone.
haussarum Neumann, 1906 - Eastern Guinea east to northern Cameroon, Central African Republic, southern Sudan, northern DRCongo and northern and western Uganda.
angolensis Neumann, 1906 - Southern PRCongo, south-western and south-eastern DRCongo, Angola, Zambia, Malawi west of Rift Valley, and south-western Tanzania.
nyassae Neumann, 1906 - South-eastern Tanzania (southern from Dar es Salaam), Malawi east of Rift Valley, northern Mozambique and eastern Zimbabwe.
