Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Fire-breasted Flowerpecker (Dicaeum ignipectus), Black-sided Flowerpecker (Dicaeum monticolum), Grey-sided Flowerpecker (Dicaeum celebicum) and Mistletoebird (Dicaeum hirundinaceum) and all sometimes treated as conspecific. Particularly close to some forms of Fire-breasted Flowerpecker (Dicaeum ignipectus) and Grey-sided Flowerpecker (Dicaeum celebicum).

Proposed subspecies ablutum, described from Tamansari (Banjoewangi), in eastern Java, subsumed within nominate.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

sanguinolentum Temminck & Laugier, 1829 - Southern Sumatra (Lampung, two records), Java and Bali.
wilhelminae B�ttikofer, 1892 - Sumba, in Lesser Sundas. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Sumba Flowerpecker (Dicaeum wilhelminae).
rhodopygiale Rensch, 1928 - Flores.
hanieli Hellmayr, 1912 - Timor. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Timor Flowerpecker (Dicaeum hanieli).
