Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Fire-breasted Flowerpecker (Dicaeum ignipectus), Black-sided Flowerpecker (Dicaeum monticolum), Blood-breasted Flowerpecker (Dicaeum sanguinolentum) and Mistletoebird (Dicaeum hirundinaceum) and all sometimes treated as conspecific. Particularly close to Black-sided Flowerpecker (Dicaeum monticolum). Subspecies talautense very distinctive and may warrant treatment as a separate species.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
- sanghirense Salvadori, 1876 - Sangihe Archipelago (Sangihe, possibly also Siau).
- talautense Meyer, AB & Wiglesworth, 1895 - Talaud.
- celebicum Müller, 1843 - Sulawesi, including Manadotua, Bangka, Lembeh, Togian Is, Muna and Butung.
- sulaense Sharpe, 1884 - Banggai I and and Sula Archipelago.
- kuehni Hartert, 1903 - Tukangbesi Archipelago.
