Subspecies
Has been thought perhaps to form a superspecies with Yellow-sided Flowerpecker (Dicaeum aureolimbatum), with which it exhibits some plumage resemblances, but differs markedly in bill shape and tongue structure. Indeed, tongue morphology is unlike that of any other species examined.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
nigrilore Hartert, 1904 - Mountains of west, central and southern Mindanao, in southern Philippines.
