Subspecies
Has been thought perhaps to form a superspecies with Olive-capped Flowerpecker (Dicaeum nigrilore), with which it shares some plumage resemblances, but differs markedly in bill shape and tongue structure. Tongue morphology resembles that of Thick-billed Flowerpecker (Dicaeum agile), Thick-billed Flowerpecker (Dicaeum agile) and Thick-billed Flowerpecker (Dicaeum agile). Subspecies rather poorly differentiated.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
aureolimbatum (Wallace, 1865) - Sulawesi and adjacent islands (including Bangka, Lembeh, Togian Is, Kabaena, Muna, Butung).
laterale Salomonsen, 1960 - Sangihe I, north of Sulawesi.
