Subspecies
Garrulax lineatus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Streaked Laughingthrush (Trochalopteron lineatum) and Bhutan Laughingthrush (Trochalopteron imbricatum) following Collar (2006).
Genus usually subsumed in Garrulax. Species sometimes placed in genus Trochalopteron. Until recently considered conspecific with Bhutan Laughingthrush (Trochalopteron imbricatum), but distinct in many features, with no intergradation despite close geographical proximity. Also, most vocalizations differ considerably.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
schachdarense Stepanyan, 1998 - South-eastern Uzbekistan east to south-eastern Tajikistan.
bilkevitchi Zarudny, 1910 - South-western Tajikistan and adjacent south-eastern Uzbekistan, north-eastern and south-eastern Afghanistan and western Pakistan.
gilgit (Hartert, 1909) - Northern Pakistan (Chitral east to Hunza, Skardu and Astor, north of Burzil Pass) and adjacent northern part of eastern Afghanistan.
lineatum (Vigors, 1831) - North-eastern Pakistan (south of R Indus) east to northern India (Uttaranchal Pradesh).
setafer (Hodgson, 1836) - Nepal east to Sikkim and northern West Bengal (India), and adjacent southern China (southern Xizang).
