Subspecies
Garrulax merulinus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Spot-breasted Laughingthrush (Garrulax merulinus) and Orange-breasted Laughingthrush (Garrulax annamensis) following Collar (2006).

Until recently regarded as conspecific with Orange-breasted Laughingthrush (Garrulax annamensis).

Proposed subspecies toxostomina (from Manipur, in north-eastern India) considered inseparable from nominate.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

merulina Blyth, 1851 - North-eastern India (south-eastern Arunachal Pradesh south to Meghalaya, Mizoram and Manipur), western and northern Myanmar and southern China (western Yunnan).
laoensis Meyer de Schauensee, 1938 - North-western Thailand.
obscura (Delacour and Jabouille, 1930) - South-eastern Yunnan (China), northern Laos and northern Vietnam (northern Tonkin).
