Subspecies
Subspecies cinereiceps highly distinctive, and possibly a separate species, but intergrades with strenua in southern China. Further study needed in order to determine width and length of zone of intergradation, and hence to decide whether or not species status warranted. Individuals of this species in south-central and south-western Sichuan have not been assigned to subspecies.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
cineracea (Godwin-Austen, 1874) - North-eastern India (Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram) and western Myanmar (Chin Hills).
strenua (Deignan, 1957) - North-eastern Myanmar and southern China (northern and western Yunnan).
cinereiceps (Styan, 1887) - Central and eastern China from southern Gansu east to western Shanghai, north-western Fujian and northern Guangdong, and northern and eastern Sichuan south to southern and south-eastern Yunnan and Guizhou; also, apparently disjunctly, in north-western and west-central Shanxi. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Eastern Moustached Laughingthrush (Garrulax cinereiceps).
