Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Chestnut-backed Laughingthrush (Garrulax nuchalis), and has been considered conspecific. Population in southern part of eastern Thailand apparently not yet assigned to subspecies. Form "lugens" (from Indochina) is a dark morph of nominate subspecies.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
lochmius (Deignan, 1941) - Southern China (south-western Yunnan), east-central and eastern Myanmar (south to extreme northern Tenasserim), north-western and north-eastern Thailand and north-western Laos.
propinquus (Salvadori, 1913) - Southern Myanmar (Tenasserim) and western Thailand.
chinensis (Scopoli, 1786) - South-eastern China (south-eastern Yunnan east to Guangxi and central Guangdong), north-east, central and southern Laos and Vietnam (south to central Annam).
monachus (Swinhoe, 1870) - Hainan I. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Hainan Laughingthrush (Garrulax monachus).
