Subspecies
No subspecies.

Garrulax leucolophus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into White-crested Laughingthrush (Garrulax leucolophus) and Sumatran Laughingthrush (Garrulax bicolor) following Collar (2006).

Formerly treated as conspecific with White-crested Laughingthrush (Garrulax leucolophus).

Similar Species
Body colour of bicolor is darker than continental forms of White-crested Laughingthrush (Garrulax leucolophus), lacking the rufous or mouse-brown tones shown in that species.
