Recent phylogenetic study indicated, surprisingly, that nominate subspecies should be treated as a separate, monotypic species, which is, moreover, closest to Grey-hooded Warbler (Phylloscopus xanthoschistos) (so that latter should be moved to present genus). This same study further suggested that the other subspecies (intensior not included in study) form a single clade of closely related taxa and represent a separate species, Kloss's Leaf-Warbler (Phylloscopus ogilviegranti), of which Hainan Leaf-Warbler (Phylloscopus hainanus) is the closest relative. Further research is required.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

• davisoni (Oates, 1889)   -  Breeds southern China (northern, western and central Yunnan), northern, eastern and southern Myanmar, northern and central Thailand, northern and central Laos and central Vietnam. Non-breeding in central and southern parts of range. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Yellow-breasted Warbler (Phylloscopus montis).
• disturbans (La Touche, 1922)   -  Breeds south-eastern China (southern Sichuan south to south-eastern Yunnan, east to northern Guizhou, south-eastern Hunan and Guangdong) and north-western Vietnam. Non-breeding in southern part of breeding range and in Indochina. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Kloss's Leaf-Warbler (Phylloscopus ogilviegranti).
• ogilviegranti (La Touche, 1922)   -  South-eastern,c Sichuan, south-eastern Yunnan, to south-central, southern Vietnam. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Kloss's Leaf-Warbler (Phylloscopus ogilviegranti).
• intensior (Oates, 1889)   -  South-eastern Thailand (Trat) and western Cambodia (Cardamom Mts).
• klossi (Riley, 1922)   -  Southern Laos and south-central and southern Vietnam. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Kloss's Leaf-Warbler (Phylloscopus ogilviegranti).
• muleyitensis (Dickinson & Christidis, 2014)   -  Extreme south-western China to eastern Myanmar, northern Thailand, northern Laos and Tonkin.
