Subspecies
Phylloscopus chloronotus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Lemon-rumped Leaf-Warbler (Phylloscopus chloronotus) and Sichuan Leaf-Warbler (Phylloscopus forresti) following Martens (2004).

Formerly treated as conspecific with Pallas's Leaf-Warbler (Phylloscopus proregulus), and also incorporating Gansu Leaf-Warbler (Phylloscopus kansuensis) and Phylloscopus yunnanensis as synonyms. Has been found, however, to be vocally and genetically distinct from all. Has very recently been suggested that subspecies forresti, differing from other subspecies in voice and molecular genetics, may represent a separate species. Further study is required.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • simlaensis Ticehurst, 1920   -  Western Himalayas east to central Nepal.
  • chloronotus (Gray & Gray, 1846)   -  Central and eastern Himalayas (eastern from central Nepal).
  • forresti Rothschild, 1921   -  Mts. of southern China. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Sichuan Leaf-Warbler (Phylloscopus forresti).
