Subspecies
Has been placed in genus Seicercus. Forms a superspecies with Laura's Woodland-warbler (Phylloscopus laurae) and Red-faced Woodland-warbler (Phylloscopus laetus). Geographical variation broadly clinal. Birds from north-eastern South Africa (Soutpansberg and Drakensberg, in eastern Northern Province) named as subspecies ochraceiceps, but considered indistinguishable from nominate.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • ochrogularis (Moreau, 1941)   -  Western Tanzania (Mahari Mts).
  • minullus (Reichenow, 1905)   -  South-eastern Kenya (Taita Hills) and north-eastern and eastern Tanzania (south to Ulugurus).
  • johnstoni (Sclater, WL, 1927)   -  Southern Tanzania and Malawi south to north-eastern Zambia and north-western Mozambique.
  • quelimanensis (Vincent, 1933)   -  Northern Mozambique (Mt Namule).
  • alacris (Clancey, 1969)   -  Eastern Zimbabwe and western Mozambique (Mt Gorongoza).
  • ruficapilla (Sundevall, 1850)   -  Eastern South Africa (eastern northern Province south to KwaZulu-Natal), western Swaziland and eastern Lesotho.
  • voelckeri (Roberts, 1941)   -  Southern South Africa (southern western Cape eastern along coast to eastern Eastern Cape).
