Subspecies
Has been placed in genus Seicercus. Forms a superspecies with Laura's Woodland-warbler (Phylloscopus laurae) and Red-faced Woodland-warbler (Phylloscopus laetus). Geographical variation broadly clinal. Birds from north-eastern South Africa (Soutpansberg and Drakensberg, in eastern Northern Province) named as subspecies ochraceiceps, but considered indistinguishable from nominate.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
ochrogularis (Moreau, 1941) - Western Tanzania (Mahari Mts).
minullus (Reichenow, 1905) - South-eastern Kenya (Taita Hills) and north-eastern and eastern Tanzania (south to Ulugurus).
johnstoni (Sclater, WL, 1927) - Southern Tanzania and Malawi south to north-eastern Zambia and north-western Mozambique.
