Subspecies
Has been placed in genus Seicercus. Forms a superspecies with Yellow-throated Woodland-warbler (Phylloscopus ruficapilla) and Laura's Woodland-warbler (Phylloscopus laurae).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

laetus (Sharpe, 1902) - North-eastern and eastern DRCongo (Lendu Plateau and Ruwenzori Mts south to Itombwe), south-western Uganda, western Rwanda and western Burundi.
schoutedeni (Prigogine, 1955) - Eastern DRCongo (Mt Kabobo).
