Subspecies
No subspecies.

Genus may belong with the vangas in family Vangidae but is retained in present family pending further study. Birds from north-eastern Madagascar described as a new species, "Newtonia olivacea", but this is merely a junior synonym of Dark Newtonia (Newtonia amphichroa).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

amphichroa Reichenow, 1891 - Humid highland forests of eastern Madagascar.
lavarambo Goodman, Younger, Raherilalalo & Reddy, 2018 - Southern Madagascar.
