Usually considered conspecific with Baikal Grasshopper-warbler (Locustella davidi), but differs in song and migratory behaviour, as well as morphologically. Western subspecies kashmirensis currently of uncertain taxonomic status and may represent a separate species.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • kashmirensis (Sushkin, 1925)   -  Breeds western Himalayas of north-western India (Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal Pradesh); possibly also Kashmir. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Himalayan Grasshopper-warbler (Locustella kashmirensis).
  • thoracica (Blyth, 1845)   -  Breeds central and eastern Himalayas from Nepal, Bhutan and north-eastern India east to northern Myanmar, and western and southern China (from south-eastern Xizang and Yunnan east to north-central Sichuan, Guizhou, and Dayao Shan region of Guangxi). Non-breeding Himalayan foothills from western Nepal east to north-eastern India (Arunachal Pradesh).
  • przevalskii (Sushkin, 1925)   -  Breeds central China (eastern Tibetan plateau of northern Qinghai east to south-western Gansu and southern Shaanxi).
