Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical montane moist forest, heavily degraded former forest, rural gardens, plantations.

Vanuatu (B).

Banks Island and Vanuatu (B).

Subspecies
Affinities obscure. May form a superspecies with Fiji White-eye (Zosterops explorator), Small Lifou White-eye (Zosterops minutus)and Green-backed White-eye (Zosterops xanthochroa). Subspecies perplexus sometimes synonymized with macgillivrayi, and efatensis with gauensis. Further study is needed.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • perplexus Murphy & Mathews, 1929   -  Extreme northern and north-eastern Vanuatu from Banks Is (Vanua Lava, Mere Lava) south to Maéwo, Aoba, Pentecost, Ambrym, Paama, Lopévi, épi, Tongoa and émaé.
  • gauensis Murphy & Mathews, 1929   -  Santa María I (Gaua), in northern Vanuatu.
  • brevicauda Murphy & Mathews, 1929   -  Espíritu Santo and Malo, in north-western Vanuatu.
  • macgillivrayi Sharpe, 1900   -  Malakula, in north-central Vanuatu.
  • efatensis Mayr, 1937   -  Nguna, éfaté and Erromango, in south-central Vanuatu.
  • flavifrons (Gmelin, 1789)   -  Tanna, Aniwa and Futuna (Erronan), in southern Vanuatu.
  • majusculus Murphy & Mathews, 1929   -  Anatom (Aneityum), in extreme southern Vanuatu.
