Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Cream-throated White-eye (Zosterops atriceps), Black-crowned White-eye (Zosterops atrifrons), Togian White-eye (Zosterops somadikartai), Sangihe White-eye (Zosterops nehrkorni), Seram White-eye (Zosterops stalkeri), Green-fronted White-eye (Zosterops minor) and Tagula White-eye (Zosterops meeki). Sometimes considered conspecific with Green-fronted White-eye (Zosterops minor), and has been thought to be conspecific with Capped White-eye (Zosterops fuscicapilla).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • admiralitatis Rothschild & Hartert, 1914   -  Manus I (Admiralty Is), in Bismarck Archipelago.
  • ultimus Mayr, 1955   -  Islands of New Hanover and New Ireland (Bismarcks).
  • hypoxanthus Salvadori, 1881   -  Umboi I, New Britain, Watom I and Mioko I (Duke of York).
