Subspecies
Grey Apalis (Apalis cinerea) and Brown-headed Apalis (Apalis alticola) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Apalis cinerea following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).
Forms a superspecies with Grey Apalis (Apalis cinerea) and they have often been treated as conspecific, but are sympatric in southern Kenya and northern Tanzania. Subspecies dowsetti is intermediate between nominate and Grey Apalis (Apalis cinerea) in amount of white in outer tail.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
alticola (Shelley, 1899) - North-central Angola, southern DRCongo, northern Zambia, northern Malawi, Tanzania and south-western Kenya.
dowsetti Prigogine, 1973 - Marungu Mts, in south-eastern DRCongo.
