Subspecies
Previously placed in genus Prinia, but differs in calls, behaviour, plumage and nest structure. Genetic evidence suggests closer relationship to Apalis and Camaroptera. Sometimes considered conspecific with Sierra Leone Prinia (Schistolais leontica), but differs in size, plumage and call. Sister-species status is supported by genetic analysis.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
leucopogon (Cabanis, 1875) - South-eastern Nigeria, Cameroon, southern Central African Republic and DRCongo (except central, eastern and south-east) south to northern Angola and northern Zambia.
reichenowi (Hartlaub, 1890) - Eastern DRCongo, southern Sudan, Uganda, south-western Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi and north-western and western Tanzania.
