Subspecies
Relationships of genus with rest of family uncertain. Probably, on basis of similarities in plumage pattern, most closely related to little-known Dusky Tetraka (Crossleyia tenebrosa).

Proposed subspecies andapae (Andapa) and ankafanae (Ankafana Forest, in Fianarantsoa) are poorly differentiated, and thus treated as synonyms of nominate.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

fulvescens (Delacour, 1931) - Humid forests of extreme northern Madagascar (Mt. d'Ambre).
zosterops (Sharpe, 1875) - Eastern and south-western Madagascar (Manongarivo and Tsaratanana Massif south to Tolagnaro, also isolated population at Analavelona).
andapae (Salomonsen, 1934) - North-eastern Madagascar (Andapa region).
ankafanae (Salomonsen, 1934) - Highlands of south-eastern Madagascar (Fianarantsoa region).
