Subspecies
In the past was sometimes placed with Pied-winged Swallow (Hirundo leucosoma) and White-tailed Swallow (Hirundo megaensis) in a separate genus Hemicecrops, and these three have been considered by some authors to form a superspecies. Subspecies poorly differentiated.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
marwitzi Reichenow, 1903 - Angola, southern DRCongo, Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, north-eastern South Africa and western Mozambique.
dimidiata Sundevall, 1850 - Namibia and Botswana south to the Cape.
