Habitat
Open, semi-arid country with short grass and low Acacia thorn-scrub (dense to sparse) with some clearings, and less commonly over farmland. From 1,500 - 1,700 m.
Southern Ethiopia (Yavello and Mega areas, in Sidamo Province).

Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status VU
Conversion of Acacia thorn-scrub to grazing land, and pastoralism to crop agriculture is the main threat.

Subspecies
No subspecies.
In the past was sometimes placed with Pied-winged Swallow (Hirundo leucosoma) and Pearl-breasted Swallow (Hirundo dimidiata) in a separate genus Hemicecrops, and these three have been considered by some authors to form a superspecies.
