Subspecies
Sometimes treated as conspecific with Red-winged Starling (Onychognathus morio ).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
modicus Bates, 1932 - Southern Mauritania, eastern Senegal, north-eastern Guinea, south-western Mali, northern Ivory Coast and south-western Burkina Faso.
neumanni (Alexander, 1908) - Eastern Mali, southern Niger, northern and south-eastern Nigeria, northern and southern Cameroon, eastern Chad and adjacent western Sudan, and western Central African Republic.
