Vagrant to Senegal.

Subspecies
Has been thought to form a superspecies with Tristram's Starling (Onychognathus tristramii). Sometimes treated as conspecific with Neumann's Starling (Onychognathus neumanni).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • rueppellii (Verreaux, J, 1856)   -  Southern Sudan, northern Kenya and central Ethiopia; perhaps also north-eastern Uganda.
  • morio (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  Eastern Uganda, central Kenya, Tanzania, eastern DRCongo, eastern and southern Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, western Mozambique, eastern Botswana, and eastern and southern South Africa.
