Subspecies
Taxonomic status of this species and Pale-chinned Flycatcher (Cyornis poliogenys) uncertain. The two hybridize extensively in eastern India (Eastern Ghats), and subspecies vernayi of Pale-chinned Flycatcher (Cyornis poliogenys) recently considered to be the result of such interbreeding. A detailed review of both forms required. There is some evidence of hybridization with Hill Blue-Flycatcher (Cyornis banyumas) in Malay Peninsula. Subspecies jerdoni differs significantly from others in plumage and voice and may merit the rank of full species.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • tickelliae Blyth, 1843   -  Southern Nepal, north, central and southern India and Myanmar (except south).
  • jerdoni Holdsworth, 1872   -  Sri Lanka.
  • indochina Chasen and Kloss, 1928   -  South-eastern Myanmar, Thailand (except peninsula), Cambodia, SLaos and central Vietnam (central and southern Annam).
  • sumatrensis (Sharpe, 1879)   -  Southern Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia, also north-eastern Sumatra (one record).
  • lamprus Oberholser, 1917   -  Anamba Is, off eastern Peninsular Malaysia.
