Subspecies
Taxonomic status of this species and Tickell's Blue-Flycatcher (Cyornis tickelliae) uncertain. The two hybridize extensively in eastern India (Eastern Ghats), and subspecies vernayi recently considered to be the product of such interbreeding. A detailed review of both forms required.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
poliogenys Brooks, 1879 - Central Himalayas east to north-eastern India (western and southern Assam, Meghalaya), eastern Bangladesh and south-western Myanmar.
cachariensis (Madarász, 1884) - Eastern Himalayas in southern China (south-eastern Xizang), north-eastern India (Arunachal Pradesh, eastern and south-eastern Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram) and north-western Myanmar.
laurentei (La Touche, 1921) - Southern China (western and south-eastern Yunnan).
vernayi Whistler, 1931 - Eastern Ghats, in eastern India.
