White-eyed Slaty Flycatcher (Melaenornis fischeri) [XC292839]
by Peter Boesman from Rubanda, Kabale, Western Region, Uganda (call)
Subspecies
Abyssinian Slaty-Flycatcher (Melaenornis chocolatinus), White-eyed Slaty-Flycatcher (Melaenornis fischeri) and Angola Slaty-Flycatcher (Melaenornis brunneus) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include fischeri and brunneus as subspecies of chocolatinus in the genus Melaenornis.
Forms a superspecies with Angola Slaty-Flycatcher (Melaenornis brunneus) and Abyssinian Slaty-Flycatcher (Melaenornis chocolatinus), and all are sometimes considered conspecific, but degree of difference and distributions suggest that treatment as allospecies is better. Birds from south-western Tanzania and adjacent DRCongo described as subspecies ufipae on basis of whiter throat and belly, but considered a pale form of nyikensis.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
fischeri (Reichenow, 1884) - South-eastern Sudan (mountains of Imatong, Dongotona and Didinga), north-eastern and eastern Uganda, western and southern Kenya and northern Tanzania.
semicinctus (Hartert, 1916) - North-eastern DRCongo (highlands west of L Albert).
toruensis (Hartert, 1900) - Eastern DRCongo (Kivu south to Itombwe), south-western Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi.
nyikensis (Shelley, 1899) - Eastern DRCongo (Marungu Highlands), Malawi, extreme north-eastern Zambia (western Nyika Plateau) and eastern and southern Tanzania.
