Subspecies
White-tailed Alethe (Alethe diademata) and Fire-crested Alethe (Alethe castanea) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Alethe diademata following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).

Forms a superspecies with Fire-crested Alethe (Alethe castanea) and has been treated as conspecific, and very similar in both song and habits, but plumage differences (including of juveniles) suggest that the two are better treated as separate species.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • diademata (Bonaparte, 1850)   -  Western Africa from Senegambia to Togo.
  • castanea (Cassin, 1856)   -  Nigeria east to western DRCongo, south to northern Angola. Also Bioko I (Fernando Póo).
  • woosnami Ogilvie-Grant, 1906   -  Northern and central DRCongo east to south-western Sudan and Uganda.
