Subspecies
Andean Slaty Thrush (Turdus nigriceps) and Eastern Slaty Thrush (Turdus subalaris) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Turdus nigriceps following SACC (2005).

Subspecies subalaris often treated as a separate species on basis of morphological and vocal differences, although these relatively minor. Males of nominate subspecies tend to vary clinally in plumage from north to south.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • nigriceps Cabanis, 1874   -  Breeds Andes of south-western Ecuador (Loja) and north-western Peru (Piura) and from central Bolivia south to central Argentina. Non-breeding also southern Ecuador south to Bolivia.
  • subalaris (Seebohm, 1887)   -  Breeds southernmost Brazil (north to Paraná), north-eastern Argentina, and south-eastern Paraguay. Winters north to south central Brazil (north to Mato Grosso and Goiás). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Eastern Slaty Thrush (Turdus subalaris).
