Voice
Song is a short, sneezy burst of high, liquid trill notes. Call is a short rasping hiss.

Subspecies
No subspecies.
Formerly placed with Kamao (Myadestes myadestinus), Olomao (Myadestes lanaiensis) and Omao (Myadestes obscurus) in a separate genus, Phaeornis. All previously regarded as conspecific, but differ vocally.
Similar Species
Kamao (Myadestes myadestinus) which is larger, plumper, with shorter, heavier bill and dark legs. Introduced Chinese Hwamei (Garrulax canorus) which is brighter cinnamon-brown with yellow bill.
