Voice
A thin 'tseeep'. Song consists of whistled phrases and is like that of other rock-thrushes. Mimics other birds calls.

Subspecies
Subspecies pretoriae has been considered a separate species, Transvaal Rock-Thrush (Monticola pretoriae), but intergrades with nominate in Kuruman District of Northern Cape, in South Africa.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

brevipes (Waterhouse, 1838) - Western Angola, Namibia and north-western South Africa (Northern Cape).
pretoriae Gunning & Roberts, 1911 - South-eastern Botswana, central South Africa (eastern from eastern northern Cape) and Swaziland. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Transvaal Rock-Thrush (Monticola pretoriae).
