Subspecies
Forest Rock-Thrush (Monticola sharpei) and Benson's Rock Thrush (Monticola bensoni) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Monticola sharpei on the basis of evidence in Goodman and Weigt (2002) and Outlaw et al. (2007), plus a review of recordings of vocalisations by the BirdLife International.

Has been considered conspecific with Amber Mountain Rock-Thrush (Monticola erythronotus), Benson's Rock Thrush (Monticola bensoni) and Littoral Rock-Thrush (Monticola imerina). Described subspecies salomonseni and interioris, from central and southern parts of range, appear untenable. A possibly undescribed rock-thrush, reported from western Madagascar, is evidently intermediate in plumage between this species and Amber Mountain Rock-Thrush (Monticola erythronotus).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • erythronotus (Lavauden, 1929)   -  Highland forest of northernmost Madagascar (Montagne d'Ambre). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Amber Mountain Rock-Thrush (Monticola erythronotus).
  • sharpei (Gray, 1871)   -  Madagascar.
  • bensoni Farkas, 1971   -  Montane rocky areas of south-central Madagascar. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Benson's Rock Thrush (Monticola bensoni).
