Subspecies
Red-billed Helmetshrike (Prionops caniceps) and Rufous-bellied Helmetshrike (Prionops rufiventris) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Prionops caniceps following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).

Forms a superspecies, and often considered conspecific, with Red-billed Helmetshrike (Prionops caniceps).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

rufiventris (Bonaparte, 1853) - Southern Cameroon east to Central African Republic and north-western DRCongo, south to Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, PRCongo and northern Angola (Cabinda).
mentalis (Sharpe, 1884) - Central and north-eastern DRCongo and western Uganda.
