Subspecies
Racial boundaries unclear and a review is needed.

The following 14 subspecies are recognised:

  • wiglesworthi Mayr, 1933   -  Rotuma (extreme northern Fiji).
  • vitiensis (Hartlaub, 1866)   -  Western Fiji (Viti Levu, Ovalau, Lomaiviti Group).
  • compressirostris (E. L. Layard, 1876)   -  Kadavu, Ono and Vanua Kula (south-western Fiji).
  • buensis (Layard, EL, 1876)   -  Vanua Levu and Kioa (northern Fiji).
  • layardi Mayr, 1933   -  Taveuni.
  • pontifex Mayr, 1933   -  Rabi and Qamea (north-eastern Fiji).
  • vatuanus Mayr, 1933   -  Lau Archipelago (Tuvuca, Yacata, Vatu Vara), in central Fiji.
  • nesiotes (Wetmore, 1919)   -  Lau Archipelago (southern from Cicia).
  • fortunae (Layard, EL, 1876)   -  Wallis and Futuna (Futuna, Alofi).
  • keppeli Mayr, 1933   -  Northern Tonga (Niuatoputapu, Tafahi).
  • heini (Finsch and Hartlaub, 1870)   -  Tonga (Tofua).
  • powelli (Salvin, 1879)   -  American Samoa (Manu'a, Ofu, Olosega).
  • brunneus (Ramsay, EP, 1875)   -  Fiji (Kadavu, Ono and Vanuakula).
  • heinei (Finsch & Hartlaub, 1870)   -  Central Tonga Islands.


Similar Species
Easily confused with female Black-throated Shrikebill (Clytorhynchus nigrogularis) which is brown, not grey, on breast. Buff undertail coverts of Fiji Shrikebill (Clytorhynchus vitiensis) contrast with brown flanks, but femail Black-throated Shrikebill (Clytorhynchus nigrogularis) has uniform underparts.
