Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical lowland dry and moist shrubland, dry forest, rural gardens, plantations. From 30 - 840 m.

Range (Guide)

French Polynesia (B) (NB).

Ua Huka in the Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia.

Estimated population is 1,000 - 2,499 (2011) and stable.

Status CR
The black rat Rattus rattus, is the main threat. Habitat destruction through storms is a minor threat. Estimated population is 1,000 - 2,499 (2010) and stable.

Habits
Flicks tail when perched.

Voice
Soft low whistles and rasping chips. Song described as a 'tchi-weu, tchi-weu, tchi-tchi-tchi'.

Subspecies
Pomarea iphis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Iphis Monarch (Pomarea iphis) and Eiao Monarch (Pomarea fluxa) following Cibois et al. (2004).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

iphis Murphy & Mathews, 1928 - Uahuka, in Marquesas Islands (French Polynesia).
fluxa ! Murphy and Mathews, 1928 - Formerly Eioa (northern Marquesas Islands). Extinct.
