Subspecies
Formerly considered conspecific with Hair-crested Drongo (Dicrurus hottentottus) and the two may form a superspecies with Tablas Drongo (Dicrurus menagei), Sulawesi Drongo (Dicrurus montanus), Sumatran Drongo (Dicrurus sumatranus), Balicassiao (Dicrurus balicassius), Spangled Drongo (Dicrurus bracteatus) and Ribbon-tailed Drongo (Dicrurus megarhynchus). Taxonomy of drongos inhabitating Lesser Sundas requires more detailed studies, both of molecular genetics and of vocalizations. Apparently no direct connection between subspecies megalornis of present species and subspecies amboiensis of Spangled Drongo (Dicrurus bracteatus), despite extreme proximity of Gorong Is (occupied by former) to eastern tip of Seram, in south-eastern Moluccas (occupied by latter). Supposedly smaller subspecies renschi (described from Sumbawa) treated as synonym of bimaensis, type locality of which also Sumbawa.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • vicinus Rensch, 1928   -  Lombok, in western Lesser Sundas.
  • bimaensis Wallace, 1864   -  Sumbawa, Komodo, Rinca, Flores, Pantar, Alor and Gunungapi.
  • sumbae Rensch, 1931   -  Sumba.
  • densus (Bonaparte, 1850)   -  Roti, Timor, Wetar and Sermata.
  • kuehni Hartert, 1901   -  Tanimbar Is, in extreme eastern Lesser Sundas.
  • megalornis Gray, GR, 1858   -  Gorong I, Watubela Is and Kai Is, in south-eastern Moluccas.
