Subspecies
Formerly considered conspecific with Hair-crested Drongo (Dicrurus hottentottus) and the two may form a superspecies with Tablas Drongo (Dicrurus menagei), Sumatran Drongo (Dicrurus sumatranus), Wallacean Drongo (Dicrurus densus), Balicassiao (Dicrurus balicassius), Spangled Drongo (Dicrurus bracteatus) and Ribbon-tailed Drongo (Dicrurus megarhynchus). Differentiation of this small montane taxon may be the result of its retreat uphill in face of invasion by lowland subspecies leucops of Hair-crested Drongo (Dicrurus hottentottus), from which it differs completely. Appears to be closely related to Halmahera subspecies atrocaeruleus of Spangled Drongo (Dicrurus bracteatus) of neighbouring Moluccas, its possible origin. DNA studies required in order to clarify taxonomic position and relationships.
