Breeds in south-central China (south-central Sichuan, north-eastern Yunnan, Guizhou, northern Guangxi, northern Guangdong). Non-breeding south-eastern Thailand and western Cambodia.

Closely related to Black Oriole (Oriolus hosii), Javan Oriole (Oriolus cruentus) and, especially, Maroon Oriole (Oriolus traillii) and all, together with Black-hooded Oriole (Oriolus xanthornus), form the "Asian black-headed group".
Similar Species
Female Maroon Oriole (Oriolus traillii) has dark brown mantle and reddish-chestnut rump and pale reddish-maroon undertail-coverts.
