Subspecies
Closely related to and perhaps forming a superspecies with Ethiopian Black-headed Oriole (Oriolus monacha). The two belong to the "African black-headed group", which also includes Green-headed Oriole (Oriolus chlorocephalus), Sao Tome Oriole (Oriolus crassirostris), Mountain Oriole (Oriolus percivali), Eastern Black-headed Oriole (Oriolus larvatus) and Black-winged Oriole (Oriolus nigripennis).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • brachyrhynchus Swainson, 1837   -  Rainforests in eastern Guinea-Bissau, south-western Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo and south-western Benin.
  • laetior Sharpe, 1897   -  Rainforests in southern Nigeria and Cameroon east to Central African Republic, extreme south-western Sudan, west, central and southern Uganda (and patchily in east), extreme western Kenya and extreme north-western Tanzania, south to Gabon, northern Angola and south-west, south-central and eastern DRCongo.
